Over the last 100 years Zebu/Brahman cattle have been bred in Northern Queensland to suit our conditions. The first Zebu bulls came from he Melbourne zoo in 1910. 1933 saw 18 Zebus (9 Bulls & 9 Heifers) and 1 Santa Gertrudis Bull imported into Queensland with these cattle and their offspring continuing to improve the northern cattle herds. Wairuna and Wetherby studs played a big part in this era. In 1946 Ken Atkinson (Wairuna) and Maurice De Tourneour (Wetherby) formed the Australian Zebu Breeders Society which became the Australian Brahman Breeders’ Association in 1954.
1950-54 saw further importation of far better types of Brahman Bulls (15) and females (16). These greatly improved the Northern Herds. Over the years probably every stud and station herd has had Bulls and or females from Wairuna, Wetherby, Burnside, Dundee and the Orient the have left their mark on the future generations of Brahman cattle. Even today if one traces a beast registered breeding back far enough one or more of these studs names will come up with bloodlines back to 1933 imports.
